Haiti Solar Energy — The Need for Green
Solar
energy is one of the most important resources on Earth. It’s a renewable source
of energy, much unlike traditional sources like coal, gas, and oil. This means
that solar power can last on the planet for centuries, even millennia.
The
history of Haiti and solar energy
Haiti
has recently taken steps to utilize solar energy more than ever before. The
country experienced a devastating earthquake in 2010, and since then, many
organizations have dedicated their time and resources to rebuilding efforts.
In fact,
these organizations have focused on rebuilding with environmental friendliness
in mind. For example, Habitat for Humanity has promised to build compostable
latrines and solar neighborhood lighting for the local community. Meanwhile,
Global Green has partnered with the APJ School to provide solar-powered
education to Haitian secondary students in Port au Prince.
These
efforts have not gone to waste. Many local providers have taken it upon
themselves to utilize solar energy, offering their own solar panels and
photovoltaic systems.
The
current state of Haiti solar energy
Haiti is
located in a tropical area, and because of this, it’s the perfect place to
harness solar power. The country receives a high ratio of sunlight, and foreign
and local investors have shown extensive interest in providing renewable
solutions to the energy crisis.
Recently,
the Haitian government has added 130MW of solar projects, and it is predicted
to grow from there in the next 10 to 15 years.
Why
Haiti solar energy is necessary
Solar
energy has more pros than cons, especially when compared to its non-renewable
counterparts. The most obvious advantage is that solar power is more
environmentally friendly. It harnesses energy from a clean and abundant
resource that does not produce harmful gases nor does it contribute to
pollution.
On top
of that, solar energy is cost-saving, despite the initial expense of installing
high-efficiency solar panels. In the long run,
utilizing solar power can drastically reduce electricity bills, maintenance
costs, and replacement costs.
